The Mercedes-Benz S-Class Sedan is the company’s flagship. It is and has always been the most advanced luxury sedan in the world. Since its introduction in 1951,the S has introduced or pioneered numerous advanced technologies. Most of these are standard or available today on cars in every price category:

  • 1958 – Fuel Injection
  • 1959 – Body Designed With Crumple Zones To Absorb Impacts
  • 1965 – Front & Rear Disc Brakes
  • 1972 – Reinforced Fuel Tank
  • 1978 – Antilock Brakes
  • 1981 – Airbags

It is no surprise that the S-Class was the best-selling luxury sedan in the world in 2016. It has long been one of the world’s safest cars. The active safety features of the S-Class help you avoid accidents, and its passive safety features help you survive them.

New S-Class Engines For 2018

The S-Class introduces a new lineup of engines for 2018. The S450 and S450 4MATIC models come with a 3.0L V6 biturbo engine that produces 362 hp.

A new 4.0L V8 with 463 hp is under the hood of the S560 and Mercedes-Maybach S560 4MATIC models. The new V8 biturbo engine is one of the most fuel-efficient V8 engines in the world, consuming about ten percent less fuel than its predecessor. This comes from its ability to deactivate four cylinders when full power is not needed.

In the high performance Mercedes-AMG S65 model, a hand-built AMG 4.0L V8 engine with cylinder deactivation replaces the previous 5.5L V8 engine. The smaller engine produces 603 horsepower, which should be adequate!

A New Generation Of Driver Assistance Features

The new 2018 Mercedes-Benz S-Class takes driver assistance a giant step further. It offers the latest in advanced features, all integrated to the point where the S-Class is not very far from being a self-driving vehicle.

Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC and Active Steering Assist help drivers to both maintain a safe following distance and stay in their lane. Speed is now adjusted automatically ahead of curves or intersections, supported by improved and expanded versions of Active Lane Change Assist and Active Emergency Stop Assist.

The upgraded Active Lane Change Assist lets you simply tap the indicator stalk to initiate a lane change. This lane change happens within the next ten seconds if the vehicle sensor system does not detect any vehicles in the relevant area.

Enhanced camera and radar systems give the new S-Class an even better view of surrounding traffic. For the first time, the car makes use of map and navigation data to calculate driving behavior. This means that vehicle speed can be adjusted based on the details of the actual route taken.

Luxury Features Have Not Been Forgotten

In addition to safety, power and driver assistance, the S-Class also offers luxury in its interior design and materials. Most surfaces are covered in leather, wood or metal. Dual 12.3” dash displays blend into a widescreen cockpit layout.

New for 2018 is the Energizing Comfort feature, the first driver wellness system in any production car. Linking the various comfort systems in the vehicle together, this option uses the functions of the climate control system; the seats’ heating, ventilation, and massage functions; the cabin heating; and the lighting and music systems.

A specific wellness set-up is tailored to the mood and need of the driver, enhancing his or her physical comfort and performance while driving and during breaks. Six different Energizing

Comfort programs can be selected:

  • Freshness
  • Warmth
  • Vitality
  • Joy
  • Comfort
  • Training (three different settings with exercises)

Each program is accompanied by on-screen graphics, suitable music, and ambient lighting selected from the 64 different colors available.
